Name: Starry Night
Date: August 17, 2018
Time: 8:00 PM - 11:00 PM PDT
Event Description:
Join Andrea Dobson, Whitman College’s astronomy department chair, for an evening star party. We will begin with a general overview in the planetarium, then head up to the roof of the Hall of Science where we will have our 8- to 10-inch telescopes set up. You’ll have an opportunity to practice finding things with the telescopes yourself and we’ll be there to help. We will observe the craters on the first-quarter Moon, the rings of Saturn, and various stars and nebulae such as the blue and gold double star Albireo in Cygnus, the Ring nebula, and the globular star cluster in Hercules. School-age children are welcome. Dobson is Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Astronomy, Director of the Clise Planetarium, and a 1982 Whitman alumna. She earned a Ph.D. in Astronomy at New Mexico State University in 1987 and joined the Whitman faculty in 1989.
