The Last Five Years - Musical Theater
“The Last Five Years” is written and composed by Jason Robert Brown, and is an emotionally powerful and intimate modern musical about two young New Yorkers who fall in and out of love over the course of five years. The show’s unconventional structure consists of Cathy, the woman, telling her story starting at the end and working backwards, the male character, Jamie, tells his story chronologically. The two characters only meet once, at their wedding in the middle of the show.
“The Last Five Years” is directed by former New York City director and producer and Walla Walla native Tyson Kaup, who will also perform the male role. Local performer Sarah Bess Hemenway will play the female role. Local musicians will join the actors on stage and provide accompaniment.
“The Last Five Years” premiered at Chicago’s Northlight Theatre in 2001, was produced Off-Broadway in 2002 and won the New York Drama Desk Award for Best Music and Lyrics.
