MUSEUM AFTER HOURS: SUSAN MONAHAN, STAYING ALIVE IN EARLY WALLA WALLA: HEALTH, HEALING AND HOAXES
Staying healthy was a challenge in the early days of our town. This After Hours talk will discuss diseases that threatened our citizens, the doctors who cared for them, and the hospitals and pest houses where the sick were treated. Susan will share firsthand accounts from early newspapers and also entries from personal journals and diaries that detail the heartbreak of the diseases and health hazards of the time. Sometimes the cures were more dangerous than the maladies. Not all remedies were effective and some were downright fraudulent. Come and learn about the patent medicines, medical procedures, and newfangled technology of the time. The talk will include a slideshow featuring historic photos and maps, and will be enhanced with examples of medical artifacts from Fort Walla Walla Museum's collection. This free presentation begins at 5 pm.
